The Snakes and Serpents series explores the snake as a universal cultural symbol. The god Kukulcan, who the Mayans believed descended during the Spring Equinox as a feathered serpent, influences these geologic abstractions of snakes. In this series there is a conscious acknowledgement of my cultural heritage that I embrace in my sculptures. My work has always communicated a pre-Columbian presence that was neither conscious nor premeditated, and I attribute this to the possibility of a genetic memory. The climax of this series is a recently completed large-scale sculpture, titled Cobra.
